CRYPTOANALYSIS: LET ME EXPLAIN THIS FFS

The sensational headlines surrounding Anthropic’s AI work on HAWK reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of how global cybersecurity actually operates: cryptanalysis is not a panic event; it is the continuous quality-control engine of the digital world.




The framing that "AI broke post-quantum security and everything is collapsing" is pure noise. Here is the reality.




1. This Is an Ongoing Discipline Run by Dedicated Teams




Cryptanalysis isn't something that happens once in a blue moon when a headline breaks. Whole teams of cryptanalysts across government bodies (NIST, NSA, BSI), academic institutions, and private defence labs spend their entire careers doing one thing: trying to shatter algorithms.




You don't secure global infrastructure by assuming code is strong; you secure it by attacking it until you're satisfied it's still standing. That continuous pressure applies to NIST candidates, deployed standards, and national schemes across Europe, Asia, and the Americas alike.




2. AI Improved the Speed: It Didn't Invent the Math




The idea that AI spontaneously generated alien mathematics to destroy an algorithm is false. The underlying domain knowledge already existed in academic literature.




In the case of HAWK, the AI model synthesized established research on lattice automorphisms (specifically building on prior work by human researchers) and executed the reduction far faster than manual human review would have. If the foundational math wasn't already there in human literature, the AI wouldn't have accomplished it. AI didn't change the rules of math: it just gave human domain knowledge a supercharger.




3. The Filter Worked Exactly as Intended




NIST doesn't "pick winners." They run multi-year, open, adversarial trials where the world tries to break candidates. HAWK was an un-adopted candidate, not a deployed standard.




Exposing a structural flaw in a candidate before it gets baked into global infrastructure isn't a failure: it is the system working perfectly. AI simply acted as a hyper-efficient automated peer reviewer.




4. AI Cryptanalysis Is Not "Quantum Risk"




Do not confuse AI-driven cryptanalysis with quantum threat:




Quantum Risk: Shor’s algorithm mathematically breaking classical public-key cryptography (RSA/ECC).


AI Cryptanalysis: Standard algorithmic and lattice stress-testing running at machine speed.


The Bottom Line




Cryptanalysis never ends. AI didn't start it, and AI won't stop it. The maths already existed; AI simply connected the dots faster. It doesn't break cryptography; it makes the scrutiny sharper, faster, and more honest.
